Opera Stories from Wagner
Florence Akin 试读
It presents the stories in simplified form, though not always true to the Wagner version. For example, at the end of the book, Siegfried and Brunnhilde return the ring to the Rhine maidens and, it is implied, live happily ever after. It was a good way for readers to become familiar with the characters and the basics of the story.

Jack Haydons Quest
John FinnemoreJohn Jellicoe 试读
Jack was on fire to be off to Brindisi and see what was wrong. He made short work of his packing, and within an hour he wasdriving to Longhampton to catch the London express. He caught itwith scarcely two minutes to spare, and was soon whirling towardsthe great city. A short distance from Longhampton, he caught aglimpse of Rushmere School in the distance on its hill, and thestrip of heath country running up to the foot of the slope. Thisbrought to mind his adventure, which remained as mysterious anaffair as ever. The police had been most active, stations had beenwatched, inquiries had been made in every direction, but all to noresult. The Thugs had vanished and left no trace behind. But thethought of his encounter on the heath soon faded from Jack's mind.It was crushed out by the pressing question of the moment. What wasthe matter at Brindisi? Why had Risley cabled and not his father?Had something happened to his father? Jack felt wretchedly uneasy, for he and his father were bound together by no ordinary ties ofaffection. In the first place, he had, as far as he knew, no other livingrelation. His mother had been dead for many years, and his fatherwas the only close friend that Jack knew. Then the elder Haydon hadalways been a great hero in his son's eyes. His profession ofmining engineer had carried him into many wild corners of theworld, and the store of marvellous tales which he would pour forthfor the boy's delight had made Jack's holidays a time of intensepleasure. Mr. Haydon had always made a point, if it was possible,of keeping himself free for such times, and he and Jack had spentthe weeks joyously, until the day for return to school had become aBlack Monday indeed in the boy's eyes.

Camp and Trail A Story of the Maine Woods
Isabel Hornibrook 试读
Now, Neal Farrar, you've got to be as still as the night itself, remember. If you bounce, or turn, or draw a long breath, you won't have a rag of reputation as a deer-hunter to take back to England. Sneeze once, and we're done for. That means more diet of flapjacks and pork, instead of venison steaks. And I guess your city appetite won't rally to pork much longer, even in the wilds. Neal Farrar sighed as if there was something in that. "But, you know, it's just when an unlucky fellow would give his life not to sneeze that he's sure to bring out a thumping big one," he said plaintively.

L‘Étranger:

William Shakespeare 试读
In the hope of saving her brother's life, should a woman submit to rape? Should the law be respected when its administrator is corrupt? How powerful in the state should religion become? Although Measure for Measure ends like a comedy, with reconciliations, forgiveness and marriages, it has often been regarded as one of Shakespeare's problem plays. The drama shows the difficulty of effecting an appropriate balance between judicial severity and mercy, between sexual repression and decadence, and between political vigilance and social manipulation. These problems remain topical, and, in Measure for Measure, they are given immediacy by vivid character-conflicts and memorably intense poetry. This is one of Shakespeare's most probing and powerful works.Measure for Measure is the fouteenth volume in the new Wordsworth Classics'Shakespear Series.

The Soul of Man under Socialism
王尔德 试读
The chief advantage that would result from the establishment of Socialism is, undoubtedly, the fact that Socialism would relieve us from that sordid necessity of living for others which, in the present condition of things, presses so hardly upon almost everybody. In fact, scarcely anyone at all escapes. Now and then, in the course of the century, a great man of science, like Darwin a great poet, like Keats a fine critical spirit, like M. Renan a supreme artist, like Flaubert, has been able to isolate himself, to keep himself out of reach of the clamorous claims of others, to stand 'under the shelter of the wall, ' as Plato puts it, and so to realise the perfection of what was in him, to his own incomparable gain, and to the incomparable and lasting gain of the whole world.

Little Men
Louisa May Alcott 试读
"Little Men" (1871) continues Louisa May Alcott's story of the March family. It picks up from "Little Women" and "Good Wives" to follow tomboy Jo into her married life. Jo and her husband, Prof. Bhaer, have opened a school for boys. Jo takes charge, but she retains a "merry sort of face," and the boys call her jolly. The school takes in troubled cases including homeless "little chap," Nat, and rowdy run-away Dan. Alcott pictures the kind of boyhood that the recent bestseller, "The Dangerous Book for Boys," hopes to rekindle. Alcott's boys climb trees and sneak off to light their first (choke ) cigars, but each lad has the makings of a good man -- qualities that Jo intends to bring out. The language might sound as quaint as "thunder turtles " and "hoydens" (grrrls), but the drama is the same now as always. Jo's concern for her boys is every teacher's -- every right parent's -- hope for every child. The story concludes with "Jo's Boys: And How They Turned Out."

Madame Bovary
Gustave Flaubert 试读
This exquisite novel tells the story of one of the most compelling heroines in modern literature--Emma Bovary. Unhappily married to a devoted, clumsy provincial doctor, Emma revolts against the ordinariness of her life by pursuing voluptuous dreams of ecstasy and love. But her sensuous and sentimental desires lead her only to suffering corruption and downfall. A brilliant psychological portrait, Madame Bovary searingly depicts the human mind in search of transcendence. Who is Madame Bovary? Flaubert's answer to this question was superb: "Madame Bovary, c'est moi." Acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its publication in 1857, the work catapulted Flaubert to the ranks of the world's greatest novelists. This volume, with its fine translation by Lowell Bair, a perceptive introduction by Leo Bersani, and a complete supplement of essays and critical comments, is the indispensable Madame Bovary.

The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights
James Knowles 试读
The Legends of KING ARTHUR and his KNIGHTS by Sir James Knowles. Illustrated by Lancelot Speed. Complete New Edition. BRAND NEW COPY King Arthur is a legendary British leader of the late 5th and early 6th centuries, who, according to medieval histories and romances, led the defence of Britain against Saxon invaders in the early 6th century. The details of Arthur's story are mainly composed of folklore and literary invention, and his historical existence is debated and disputed by modern historians. The sparse historical background of Arthur is gleaned from various sources, including the Annales Cambriae, the Historia Brittonum, and the writings of Gildas. Arthur's name also occurs in early poetic sources such as Y Gododdin. The legendary Arthur developed as a figure of international interest largely through the popularity of Geoffrey of Monmouth's fanciful and imaginative 12th-century Historia Regum Britanniae (History of the Kings of Britain). Some Welsh and Breton tales and poems relating the story of Arthur date from earlier than this work in these works, Arthur appears either as a great warrior defending Britain from human and supernatural enemies or as a magical figure of folklore, sometimes associated with the Welsh Otherworld, Annwn. How much of Geoffrey's Historia (completed in 1138) was adapted from such earlier sources, rather than invented by Geoffrey himself, is unknown.

Hugh Memoirs of a Brother
Arthur Christopher Benson 试读
Arthur Christopher Benson (1862-1925) was a British essayist, poet and author. He was one of six children of Edward White Benson, a late nineteenth-century Archbishop of Canterbury. The Benson family were exceptionally literate and accomplished, but their history was somewhat tragic. A son and daughter died young, and another daughter, as well as Benson himself, suffered badly from a mental condition that was probably manic-depressive psychosis. Despite his illness, Benson was a distinguished academic and a most prolific author. He was associated with Eton College, and was Master of Magdalene College of Cambridge University. His poems and volumes of essays, such as From a College Window (1906), were famous in his day, and he left one of the longest diaries ever written, some four million words.

Pride and Prejudice
简·奥斯汀 试读
Pride and Prejudice is the story of Mr and Mrs Bennet (minor gentry), their five daughters, and the various romantic adventures at their Hertfordshire residence of Longbourn. The parents' characters are greatly contrasted: Mr Bennet being a wise and witty gentleman; while Mrs Bennet is permanently distracted by the issue of marrying off her daughters at any cost. The reason for Mrs Bennet's obsession is that their estate will pass by law after Mr Bennet's death to his closest blood relative: his cousin, the Reverend William Collins (a fatuous, tactless and pompous man). Austen's tale is spurred on by the arrival of the young and wealthy bachelor Charles Bingley and his friend Fitzwilliam Darcy. It is the story of the various affections, affectations and engagement shenanigans that develop due to Mrs Bennet's relentless matchmaking and the dashing Darcy's tempestuous relationship with Elizabeth Bennet who Jane Austen claimed was favourite amongst her literary offspring. Its 1797 earlier version was turned down for publication and it appeared in this form in 1813.

The narrator, Marlowe journeys on business deep into the heart of Africa. But there he encounters Kurtz, an idealist apparently crazed and depraved by his power over the natives, and the meeting prompts Marlowe to reflect on the darkness at the heart of all men. A close associate of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the brilliant but troubled de Quincey recounts both the pleasures and pain of opium addiction in captivating prose. The result is by turns enlightened, nightmarish and witty – a faithful mirror of the drug itself.
